happy weekend!

packing and preparations filled this week, but we did take a break to eat at Roam. this is the best burger i've ever had (and i've had a lot of burgers). it had an egg on it with a slightly spicy chili sauce. yum. when you add a blue bottle coffee shake, zucchini fries and a ginger lime soda i was in heaven. i highly suggest you eat there this weekend.

i also made these delicious enchiladas. yum. if you crave tex mex and don't have access or have ever wondered exactly what tex mex means. make these, now. they are amazing and encapsulate the flavorful spiciness of the cuisine i love.

i can't wait to make have dinner with some good friends, work a bit and enjoy a cookout. summer is underway. even if that does mean fog, i'll enjoy it while i can. what are your weekend plans?

weekend plans

*

well i've been a bit under the weather this week (i did manage to make this recipe which i think you should try) but i can't wait to enjoy the weekend. stuffy nose and all. i plan to do some cooking, including my grandmother's coffee cake, which i haven't tried before, i'll keep you updated. we're also going to see water for elephants, i read the book awhile back and the movie looks beautiful. with it being easter sunday its going to be a full three days but i plan on sneaking a nap in somewhere. happy weekend!

i love alabama

its been hitting me lately, the desire to see red mountain, let my southern drawl out a bit and of course see my lovely birmingham friends. while i can't jump on a plane sadly, i hunted down some alabamian barbq. to do this we headed to oakland and everett & jones. the founder moved here from alabama in the 70s and realized if she was going to eat well she'd have to make it herself. i'm sure glad she did. the sauce was what was truly amazing followed by the tender meat and incredible baked beans. it was a wonderful afternoon, only made perfect if i'd really been in birmingham.

friends & food

our lives have changed for the better over this past month and this week really showed that difference as we ate out with two different couple friends. we've felt reclusive lately due to our busy schedules and tendency to enjoy reading at home, aka we're nerds. so it was wonderful to be introduced to two new places, fried chicken at Hard Knox Cafe in the dogpatch and souffle pancakes, incredible!, at Bette's Diner in Berkeley. and interact with unique, fun individuals. we can't wait to hang out again soon!

cheesy bread

this week has been out of the ordinary since the family i work for has been out of town. we've had a little more free time in the evenings but varied constraints throughout the day, and the dogs sleep with us. enough said. but its been feeling like fall, and we've spent some time in the east bay where some of the trees are actually changing color, and had good times with friends old and new. my soup this week was butternut squash, it was very savory, almost to much since i adjusted the spices for dried and overcompensated i think, as in i dumped in what looked right and so i'd just stick to her measurements if at all possible. it was a good twist on a normally sweeter soup. we didn't try the croutons but i did make this recipe for gruyere cheese, pull apart bread. here's the recipe from food and wine 2010:

1 1/2 sticks cold, unsalted butter, cube 1 stick
1 lg onion, finely chopped, i probably did about a 1/4 of the onion which wasn't quite enough but still really flavorful, i might suggest trying 1/2 an onion
1 tblsp poppy seeds
kosher salt and pepper
3 onces Gruyere cheese, coarsely shredded, {1 cup}
2 cups all purpose flour, plus more for dusting
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspon baking soda
1 cup buttermilk

preheat the oven to 425. butter a 9 by 4 1/2 inch metal loaf pan. In a large skillet, melt the 1/2 stick of uncubed butter, pour two tbls of the melted butter into a small bowl and reserve. add the chopped onion to the skillet and cook over moderate heat. stirring occassionally, until its softened, about 8 minutes. stir in the poppy seeds and season with salt and pepper. scrape the onion mixture onto a plate and refrigerate for 5 minutes, until cooled slightly, then stir in the coarsely shredded gruyere cheese.

meanwhile in a food processor, or i just used a fork and then my hands, pulse the 2 cups o flour with the baking powder, baking soda and 1 teaspoon of salt. add the stick of cubed butter and pulse until the butter cubes are the size of small peas. add the buttermilk and pulse 5 or 6 times, just until a soft dough forms.

this is the tricky part guys.....turn the dough out onto well- floured work surface and knead 2 or 3 times. pat or roll the dough into a 2 by 24 inch rectangle. spread the onion mixture on top of the bread. cut the dough crosswise, in as close to the same width strips as possible. mine weren't and began to wobble in the next step. stack 9 pieces onion side up then top with the final piece onion side down, after about the 5th piece it began to wobble, so i put it in the loaf pan sideways and added the other pieces side by side. carefully lay the stack in the prepared loaf pan and brush the top with the reserved melted butter.

bake the loaf in the center of the oven for about 30 minutes, until it is golden and risen. let the bread cool for atleast 15 minutes before unmolding and serving.

this was amazing, super filling and perfect with the soup, worth the time for sure. especially if you don't have a dog in the house and leave it on the counter. you fill in the gaps.

and i must credit jacob's amazing skills as dishwasher to make this kitchen possible.

i'd love to hear anyone else's twist on their favorite soup...

craziness

this week has been a bit crazy with fleet week people taking all our parking and jets zooming overhead and a guy in a golf cart hitting our tandem bike and working more than usual but san francisco redeemed itself somewhat with lit crawl, where we heard readings about the antique object in the very quaint store gypsy honeymoon,

to the miraculous return of my wallet. it apparently fell out of my purse when i was walking home last night, which i didn't realize until our doorbell rang and two guys returned it from the sidewalk with everything in tact. amazing.
i'm just glad i have today off from work to recover from this week. happy columbus day!

off the grid

the harpers and us went out on friday to fort mason to check out off the grid. its a gathering of street carts that i've heard of before but this was the first friday i had off to enjoy its treats. there were about ten carts. they had all kinds of food from ramen, to tacos, to asian buns-longest line ever, to creme brulee-finally!, and smores. there were so many people there mingling and eating and drinking and there was music. the typical bay weather blew threw but it was worth it to huddle together and decide what to eat, gathering the best and sampling it all. emily and i tried hapa ramen, who apparently prepare their broth for days before. my favorite part was their lightly pickled cucumbers to put on top. jacob and jody both tried barbeque and the yucatan cart. i love the mentality of delicious, sustainable, good food without the restaurant atmosphere and with so many options. even better, the company was the best part. thanks for making us laugh!

elissa love

i can't express how glad i am that elissa made it out to see us. she's been in japan far too long and it was about time i gave her a hug. we went all over the city and napa but her favorite was of course japan town where we enjoyed getting to see her speak japanese and she introduced us to umeshu and many other japanese delicacies.

she was very kind to ride around in volksy with us.

sterling winery

dolores park

since our days in the Samford library we have been kindred spirits and it was so good to share the city and the man i love with her. thanks for coming e!

a little bit of everything

its been a lovely weekend so far, i've been slowed down a bit with a cold, but we've enjoyed the return of friends and some new adventures. yesterday i baked a delicious peach buckle which is just a fruity cake but i used browned butter which is my new favorite ingredient, it made the dish delectable.

we made it to the ranger's game at the a's stadium and enjoyed the win immensely. while i normally roam the stadium during baseball it was entertaining and good company makes a difference. i will say it was the coldest ranger's game, make that baseball game i've ever been to. they did put on a great fireworks show.

the farmer's market was on the list for this morning and we were joined by the harpers who were brave enough to ride bikes down there with us. it was wonderful. we bought some tomatoes and goat cheese and tried pounds of peaches and nectarines and pluots. Followed by lunch at java red's under the bay bridge.

what a way to enjoy the city.

afternoon sun

the weekend started out with a stroll though the japanese tea gardens in with friends in golden gate park. They're free before 10am on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. thanks bekah for the heads up.

though the weather had all the appearance of staying as foggy as when we woke up the sun shone through throughout the weekend. we lounged in the park, grilled out and did a little dance. it was lovely.

we also enjoyed Inception, amazing. go see it immediately.

cafe velo rouge

jacob and i stopped by this cafe yesterday afternoon after the free day at the de young. we enjoyed the bike theme and the delicious blue bottle coffee. i had been there before for breakfast with bekah a while back but had been jonesing to return for a while. it was as good as i remember and we split a breakfast burrito whose flavors combined perfectly for a wonderful and satisfying meal.
they have live music on friday nights and sunday afternoons.
it might be the perfect after church lunch spot.

sushi and eclairs

where else can you visit the beach, eat delicious cheap sushi and top it off with an eclair at a russian bakery? only san francisco. it was a beautiful sunny day and i'm so glad i got to enjoy it with bekah and jacob.

we're headed home tomorrow so this was a lovely way to spend our last day here before we go to texas for a week. we'll miss it.

weekend

kimberly and i grew up together since we were born a day apart in the same hospital. our friendship has grown no matter how far away we are. her visit this week has been so good and i've enjoyed exploring the city with her. some highlights have been ritual coffee's fifth birthday party where we listened to music, enjoyed free coffee and people watched extensively
also experiencing bay to breakers,
in n out,
and people's park in berkeley.

delarosa

another birthday this week, yay for birthdays!
so we went to chestnut street to celebrate.
i've already discussed delarosa once before and jacob and i went there when he visited in february.

it is delicious.
they have an awesome drink selection and their pizza is yummy but with a different twist.
{i also highly suggest the eggplant appetizer.}
the only problem is that everyone else knows this as well apparently.
it was very loud and we felt we were privy to an interesting first, and probably last date.
i'm thinking it would be perfect for lunch though.
and i definitely enjoyed getting to celebrate
our sweet april.

cheeseburger

i have craved one all week to no avail. the opportunity for in n out, my favorite, did not arise and i continued to imagine the meaty, greasy, goodness topped with all my favorite fixins especially grilled onions. these kind of cravings do not happen often but when they do its bad. i googled best burger in san francisco and relived my favorite burgers of all time like the broken record, who puts chopped up bacon in the patty and growing up on jon's hamburgers in fort worth, with tons of their special seasoning on the fries. it was bad. finally on sunday danielle and i stopped over at it's tops burgers.

oh my goodness. its been there since 1933 and it truly lives up to its name. the burger hit the spot along with their fresh cut fries. it was lovely to catch up with danielle as well. so despite the rain it was a beautiful day.

clouds

so i was sitting in my apartment last week, attempting to work, pressure motivation severely lacking, when i got a phone call and ran outside. the clouds were beautiful and it made my day.
what a sweet friend.
